10-Day Taiwan Itinerary: Highly Recommended for the Full Experience
With 10 days or more, you can combine the best of the east coast, mountains, lakes, and Taipei without feeling rushed. This is the ideal length for a complete Taiwan trip that lets you see the island’s diverse landscapes, food, and culture.
Important Note for East Coast Travel
Public transportation on Taiwan’s east coast (Hualien & Taitung) is not very reliable or frequent. Buses are limited, and trains don’t cover all the scenic spots. For safety and convenience, I highly recommend hiring a local driver. The mountain roads can be winding and tricky, especially in rain or at night—having a local driver is much safer and lets you explore at your own pace.
Note on High-Speed Rail
The high-speed rail (HSR) does not go to the east coast. For Hualien and Taitung, use the regular Taiwan Railway train (from Taipei or other west coast cities) or hire a local driver/private transfer. Trains are scenic but slower—plan for 2–4 hours depending on your starting point.
Taroko National Park Update (as of December 2025)
Taroko National Park remains partially or fully closed in many areas due to severe damage from the recent earthquake. Some trails, roads, and attractions (e.g., Eternal Spring Shrine, Swallow Grotto, Tunnel of Nine Turns) are inaccessible or under repair. Always check the official Taroko National Park website or local tourism apps for the latest status before your trip.
Taroko is my most recommended place in Taiwan – its marble gorges, waterfalls, and dramatic scenery are truly unforgettable. If Taroko is still closed, replace those days with extra time in Hualien (beaches, hot springs, or coastal drives) or Taitung (indigenous culture, hot springs, or beaches).
